Biǎn Lì Hú

扁笠壶
Flat, bold, and quietly brilliant — the farmer's hat in clay.

The Biǎn Lì Hú, or 'flat bamboo hat' teapot, takes its name from the wide, low-brimmed hats worn by Chinese farmers — and one look tells you exactly why. Its dramatically flattened, disc-like body sits close to the ground with quiet confidence, balancing bold geometry with an almost meditative calm. This style was famously elevated by Gu Jingzhou, one of Yixing's greatest 20th-century masters, who collaborated with fine artists to push its clean lines into the realm of sculpture.

Did You Know?

Gu Jingzhou didn't work alone — in the 1950s he teamed up with professors from Chinese art academies to bring concepts like geometric composition and visual balance into teapot design, turning humble clay into a conversation between craft and fine art.
